The Melbourne Energy Institute is pleased to host Kevin Ly, Group Manager - Reform Development and Insights from the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), as he presents findings from AEMO's latest Quarterly Energy Dynamics (QED) report. The report covers dynamics, trends and outcomes in Australia’s electricity and gas markets in Q4 2021, over the period 1 October to 31 December 2021. During this period:

  • cooler temperatures resulted in lower National Electricity Market (NEM) demand compared to Q4 2020, but spot market prices and volatility continued to rise as the quarter progressed;
  • there were significant spot price divergences between regions and times of day;
  • renewables generation growth continued to displace thermal generation;
  • there was a reduction in gas generation in South Australia, partly due to the commissioning of synchronous condensers; and
  • east coast gas prices remained elevated with surging international prices driving high Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) exports.

The full report is available on the AEMO website.

Catch up via the webinar recording.

Discussion of the report will be led by Kevin Ly and moderated by MEI’s Director of Major Projects, Adrian Panow.
