The transition to a low-carbon energy system is well and truly under way. Energy sources considered alternatives two decades ago are at the forefront of Australia’s new landscape. The distribution of power, literally and figuratively, may look very different in the decade to come.
Yet to be decided are the business models that will guide the transition. What will be the norm of community access to solar? How will hydrogen permeate our infrastructure? How can Australia tangibly use its renewable resources to lead the global marketplace?
Be part of the transition and help answer these questions. Join the University of Melbourne and founding partner Powershop for five dynamic weeks at ‘Energy Hack 2019’.
Whether you have an energy innovation, seeds of a start-up or are looking to learn new skills and grow your network, this year’s Hack will support a diverse community of entrepreneurs determined to harness the consumer and technology revolution in energy.
Through several mentoring and pitching sessions the hackathon will bring experts in industry and policy together with multidisciplinary researchers and students. From the Melbourne Energy Institute and Powershop, as well as our partners AEMO, Arup, AGIG, City of Melbourne, IBM, Siemens, and the Victorian State Government.
Theme
Energy Hack 2019 will challenge teams to develop a business model that drives improvements in affordability, reliability and sustainability in Australia’s energy system.
Starting in early September, teams will work over five weeks with industry mentors - covering energy technology, modelling, data management, finance, marketing, and strategy - to develop the most viable project.
With $35,000 in prize money to be won, now is the time to test out your energy innovation or create a team with the talent to be the next big energy start-up.

Dates
Launch and team formation 5.30pm-9.00pm, Friday 6th September
Full day mentoring session 10.00am-6.00pm, Saturday 21st September
Drop in mentoring session 3.00pm-6pm, Wednesday 25th September
Half day mentoring session 9.00am-1.00pm, Saturday 5th October
Semi-final pitches 6.00pm-9.00pm, Wednesday 9th October
Final pitches 5.30pm-9.00pm, Wednesday 16th October
Location
All sessions will be held at the University of Melbourne Parkville campus in Victoria. Mentoring sessions will take place in the Collaborative Learning Space (Room 428), Engineering Block C. Pitching sessions occur at the Forum Theatre, Arts West North Wing.
Pre-requisites
Anyone with a passion for learning and solving problems is welcome.
Teams
You can come in a preformed team - whether that be as a budding start-up or group of friends - or meet new friends and team mates at the hack.
What to bring
All food and drink will be provided. Please bring your own tech, and of course, your creative mind!
Prizes
There is $35K in cash prizes up for grabs, as well as opportunities to pitch and receive feedback from top energy leaders.
Event costs
Registration for the entire Hack is $25 per person. This includes all food and beverages.
Rules
Team size must be between 3-8 members. Any pre-formed team can enter the Hack with a business concept that delivers benefits to energy reliability, affordability and/or sustainability as long as they have not generated any revenue from the idea/model, to date. They must participate fully in all three of the four hacking sessions if they want to pitch. All winnings must be spent on the project proposed in the final pitch event.
