This seminar, presented Mr. Steve Henzell, Senior Technical Advisor at global consulting firm Advisian, outlines the history and evolution of gas production and consumption in Australia. It is the first instalment in the MEInetwork22 Seminar Series, with a focus on the gas supply chain.

From the 1850s, cities were supplied with town gas, generated from coal supplies. In the 1960s, natural gas discoveries, both onshore and offshore Australia, allowed the conversion of town gas to the cleaner natural gas in most Australian cities. Coal seam gas has been extracted for commercial use since 2001 and expanded significantly in Queensland in the 2010s. Shale gas has become a huge resource within the United States but remains within its infancy here in Australia.

Later seminars will discuss in more detail liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the Australian gas markets, which have evolved considerably since the first natural gas developments, leading to the interconnected East Coast gas network and energy trading with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). This seminar describes how conventional and unconventional natural gas resources have influenced these markets.

The seminar was hosted as a hybrid event, simultaneously delivered in person and streamed online.

In 2022, the MEInetwork22 Seminar Series will be comprised of seven seminars covering the gas supply chain, including discussion of the prospects of hydrogen displacing natural gas.

Mr. Steve Henzell is a Senior Technical Advisor for Advisian. He has 40 years of experience in oil and gas facility design and operation in Australia and worldwide. He has been directly involved with all gas developments in Victoria and has advised on conventional and unconventional gas developments throughout Australia. He provides specialist technical advice in the industry.

Professor Michael Brear

Melbourne Energy Institute, University of Melbourne

Professor Michael Brear is a mechanical engineer and the Director of the Melbourne Energy Institute (MEI) at the University of Melbourne. MEI facilitates the University’s research on the technical, economic, environmental and social impacts of energy.

Michael is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, the Combustion Institute, Engineers Australia and the Australian Institute of Energy. He previously established the University’s multi-disciplinary degree, the Master of Energy Systems. Prior to commencing at the University of Melbourne, Michael worked for ICI Australia (now Orica), and then undertook graduate studies at Cambridge University and post-doctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
