The Melbourne Energy Institute on 24 November 2022 hosted a public lecture by Professor Jovica Milanović from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. Discussion was moderated by Professor Pierluigi Mancarella, Program Leader in Energy Systems at the Melbourne Energy Institute.

What will net-zero networks look like, and how will they operate? In this presentation, Professor Milanović introduces the characteristics and challenges of the distribution network environment, now and into the future.

First, the presentation briefly introduces the key characteristics of future net-zero distribution networks and summarises the key challenges associated with their operation, modelling and control. Second, examples are discussed of the latest research results in distribution network modelling and operation. Finally, the presentation ends with a brief summary of current developments in the UK related to the Electricity Distribution Price Control 2023-2028 (RIIO-ED2). The RIIO-ED2 price control sets the outputs that the 14 electricity Distribution Network Operators need to deliver for their consumers and the associated revenues they are allowed to collect for the five-year period from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2028. Lessons are drawn for operation, modelling and control of future net-zero distribution networks.

Professor Jovica Milanović

Jovica V. Milanović is a Professor of Electrical Power Engineering and Deputy Head of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Manchester, UK, and Visiting Professor at the University of Novi Sad and the University of Belgrade, Serbia.

He received Dipl.Ing. and M.Sc. degrees from the University of Belgrade, Yugoslavia, a PhD from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and D.Sc. degree from the University of Manchester, UK. Prior to joining the University of Manchester, in 1998 he worked with Energoproject, Engineering and Consulting Co. and the University of Belgrade in Yugoslavia, and the Universities of Newcastle and Tasmania in Australia.

He has served as chairman of five international conferences, editor or member of editorial/technical boards of 70+ international journals and conferences, research project assessor or panel member for numerous international government research funding councils, member of nine (convenor of three) past or current IEEE/CIGRE/CIRED working groups, and has been a consultant or member of advisory boards for several international companies. He has participated in or led numerous research projects with total value of more than £80 million, published about 600 research papers and reports, given about 30 keynote speeches at international conferences, and presented about 150 courses/tutorials and lectures to industry and academia around the world.

Professor Milanovic is a Chartered Engineer in the UK, Foreign member of the Serbian Academy of Engineering Sciences, Fellow of the IET, Fellow of the IEEE, Distinguished IEEE PES Lecturer, member of the IEEE PES Industry Technical Support Leadership Committee, member of the IEEE PES Long Range Planning Committee, member of IEEE Fellows Committee and Editor-in-Chief of IEEE Transactions on Power Systems. He was a member of the IEEE PES Governing Board as Regional Representative for Europe, Middle East and Africa for six years, member and vice-chair of IEEE PES Fellows Evaluation Committee and member and Chair of the IEEE Herman Halperin Transmission and Distribution Award Committee.

Pierluigi Mancarella is Chair Professor of Electrical Power Systems at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Professor of Smart Energy Systems at the University of Manchester, UK. His key research interests include techno-economic modelling and analysis of multi-energy systems, grid integration of renewables and distributed energy resources, energy infrastructure planning under uncertainty, and security, reliability, and resilience of low-carbon networks.

He is the Energy Systems Program Leader at the Melbourne Energy Institute, an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Power and Energy Society Distinguished Lecturer, the Convenor of the CIGRE (International Council of Large Electric Systems) C6/C2.34 Working Group on Flexibility Provision from Distributed Energy Resources, holds the 2017 veski innovation fellowship for his work on urban-scale virtual power plants, and is a recipient of the international Newton Prize 2018 for his work on power system resilience in Chile. He is author of several books and over 300 research papers and reports, and is a journal editor of the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, the IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid, and Oxford Open Energy.

In the past few years, Pierluigi has supported the Finkel Review panel, the Australian Energy Market Operator, the Australian Energy Market Commission, and the Australian Energy Regulator on relevant research and consultancy projects on power system security, reliability, and resilience, and has led and been involved in several projects via the Australian Renewable Energy Agency and Cooperative Research Centres.
