In this presentation hosted by the Melbourne Energy Institute, Professor Ian Hiskens discussed the dynamic performance of grid-connected converter-based resources. A converter control scheme that has both grid-forming and grid-following characteristics was introduced. Using this control scheme, dynamic behaviour was explored under a variety of system conditions, with the aim of establishing some general properties.

An example illustrated the capability of the control scheme to support autonomous switching between grid-connected and islanded operation, and vice-versa. Small disturbance (linear) analysis was used to provide insights into the nature of modal oscillations and the factors affecting oscillation frequency and damping.

The public lecture was hosted as a hybrid event, simultaneously delivered in person and online.

Professor Ian A. Hiskens

Vennema Professor of Engineering, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, University of Michigan, United States

Professor Hiskens has held prior appointments with the Queensland electricity supply industry, and various universities in Australia and the United States. His research interests lie at the intersection of power system analysis and systems theory, with recent activity focused largely on integration of renewable generation and controllable loads.

Professor Hiskens is involved in numerous IEEE activities in the Power and Energy Society, Control Systems Society, Circuits and Systems Society and Smart Grid Initiative, and has served as VP-Finance of the IEEE Systems Council. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the IEEE, a Fellow of IEEE and a Fellow of Engineers Australia. He is a Chartered Professional Engineer in Australia, and the 2020 recipient of the M.A. Sargent Medal from Engineers Australia.
