On 14 May, the Australian Energy Market Operator's (AEMO) presented key findings from their most recent Quarterly Dynamics report.

The Q1 report analysed energy market dynamics, highlighting trends and outcomes experienced by the NEM and gas markets during the first quarter of 2019 (1 January to 31 March).

Dr Jonathan Myrtle, Acting Manager of Market Insights at AEMO, presented the key findings of the Q1 report, including: record high spot wholesale electricity prices in Victoria and South Australia; hot summer conditions increasing electricity demand; increased solar generation due to new capacity, with reduced hydro output due to dry conditions; and a continuation of comparatively high wholesale gas prices as gas-powered generation and oil prices rebounded.

MEI regularly hosts the AEMO's Quarterly Dynamics presentations at the University of Melbourne. To find out more about the reports read the recent interview MEI conducted with the current and previous presenters.
