Mark Fothergill leads APA Group’s engineering capability for new gas infrastructure across Australia and brings more than 35 years’ experience spanning gas system planning, infrastructure development, acquisitions, engineering design, and pipeline operations. His career is characterised by deep technical expertise combined with strategic leadership in concept selection, major project delivery, decarbonisation of gas grids, and operational readiness across complex gas supply arrangements.

Since the late 1980s, Mark has been directly involved in the development, expansion, and operation of significant elements of Australia’s gas pipeline system. He has held senior engineering roles on major projects including the Moomba–Sydney Ethane Pipeline, Victoria–NSW Interconnector, Northern Goldfields Interconnector, Western Outer Ring Main, the Kurri Kurri gas storage facility, and the establishment of the East Coast Gas Grid.

Mark has also made strong contributions to industry governance and standards development. He has served as Chair of the Australian Pipelines and Gas Association Research and Standards Committee and as a Director of the Energy Pipelines Cooperative Research Centre, supporting collaboration between industry, regulators, and researchers to advance safe, efficient, and innovative pipeline infrastructure.

His professional interests include gas infrastructure development, engineering standards and assurance, network-wide system resilience, and supporting the evolution of Australia’s energy networks through disciplined leadership and lifecycle asset management.
