This seminar was presented by Ms Carolyn Au, Operations Manager at Shell specialising in liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology and gas processing, and moderated by Professor Michael Brear, Director of the Melbourne Energy Institute. It was the third instalment of the MEInetwork22 Seminar Series, with a focus on the gas supply chain.
The liquefaction of natural gas, first commercialised in the 1930s, has provided a safe and practical method of transporting energy around the world, delivering it from remote and isolated origin locations to economies, markets, and households thousands of kilometres away. This seminar will look at the history of liquefied natural gas (LNG), its growth to becoming almost one quarter of the world’s supply of energy today and some present realities impacting the LNG industry, as well as future directions. LNG is considered a key transition fuel to a net zero future, and Australia’s role in the world LNG supply and export chain will be critical to this journey.
The seminar was hosted as a hybrid event, simultaneously delivered in person and streamed online. Please note that COVID-19 vaccination (or exemption) is a requirement for attending campus.

The MEInetwork Seminar Series aims to give participants a sound understanding of the current technical and economic factors that underpin the Australian energy system. Knowledge of these market factors is critical in determining the changes required to move towards a clean energy system.
Each year, the Seminar Series takes a deep dive into the complete supply and value chain of one of our primary energy vectors. In 2022, the MEInetwork22 Seminar Series will be comprised of seven seminars covering the gas supply chain, including discussion of the prospects of hydrogen displacing natural gas.

Shell
Ms Carolyn Au is Operations Manager at Shell specialising in LNG technology and gas processing. She has 22 years of energy industry experience in the gas and LNG sector. After joining Shell in 2007 in the Hague, the Netherlands, as an LNG and gas technology design engineer, she moved into LNG operations and asset management. Working in this area, she spent seven years on Sakhalin Island in Russia, where Shell operated a two-train LNG facility, and three years at the Shell QGC LNG facility on Curtis Island in Gladstone, Queensland. She is now based in Brisbane.

Professor Michael Brear is a mechanical engineer and the Director of the Melbourne Energy Institute (MEI) at the University of Melbourne. MEI facilitates the University’s research on the technical, economic, environmental and social impacts of energy.
Michael is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering, the Combustion Institute, Engineers Australia and the Australian Institute of Energy. He previously established the University’s multi-disciplinary degree, the Master of Energy Systems. Prior to commencing at the University of Melbourne, Michael worked for ICI Australia (now Orica), and then undertook graduate studies at Cambridge University and post-doctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
