ABOUT

This seminar is the fifth instalment in the MEInetwork22 Seminar Series. With a focus on Green hydrogen as an alternative to natural gas, the seminar was presented by Mr Michael Bielinski, Chief Executive Officer of Siemens Energy. Discussion was moderated by Professor Michael Brear, Director of the Melbourne Energy Institute.

The presentation takes a holistic view of the drivers for green hydrogen, in particular the national goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and explores the role that green hydrogen has to play in the future energy landscape in Australia in replacing natural gas as well as other fossil fuels. The renewable electricity generation that is required to produce the green hydrogen is analysed, as well as the various likely uses of green hydrogen, directly as a gas, and as various chemical derivatives. The presentation concludes with a review of the challenges facing the nation to produce the volumes of green hydrogen that will be required both for domestic energy supply and for export.

The seminar was hosted as a hybrid event, delivered in person and streamed online.

Date: Tuesday 13 September 2022
Time: 3:00 - 4:30 pm AEST
Venue: Manhari Room (Room 7212), Level 7, Melbourne Connect, 700 Swanston St and online

MEInetwork22

To transform our energy system, we first need to understand how it works. The MEInetwork Seminar Series aims to give participants a sound understanding of the current technical and economic factors that underpin the Australian energy system. Knowledge of these market factors is critical in determining the changes required to move towards a clean energy system.

Each year, the Seminar Series takes a deep dive into the complete supply and value chain of one of our primary energy vectors. In 2022, the MEInetwork22 Seminar Series will be comprised of seven seminars covering the gas supply chain, including discussion of the prospects of hydrogen displacing natural gas.
