SPEAKER

Mr Kevin Ly
Group Manager - Reform Development and Insights
Australian Energy Market Operator

Kevin Ly is the Group Manager for Reform Development and Insights at the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). His role covers many aspects of energy markets, including market design, policy and regulation, working with the Energy Security Board (ESB), the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) on market reform. Kevin is also responsible for the development and publication of the Quarterly Energy Dynamics report.

Prior to joining AEMO, Kevin held a variety of senior wholesale and market development roles at Snowy Hydro and CS Energy, extending back to the commencement of the National Electricity Market (NEM) in December 1998.

Kevin is an engineer by training, and holds a Masters degree in Engineering Science from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), a Masters degree in Arts (Applied Research) from Macquarie University, and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Queensland.

MODERATOR

Dr Sleiman Mhanna
Senior Research Fellow, Integrated Energy Systems, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Melbourne

Sleiman Mhanna is a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Melbourne working on a Future Fuels CRC project aiming at developing mathematical models for the integrated planning of electricity and hydrogen infrastructures, which will assess transport and storage options for future fuels such as green hydrogen.

Dr Mhanna received his PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Sydney in 2016 with an emphasis on fast distributed methods in power systems and demand response pricing mechanisms. For the subsequent three years he was a research fellow at the same institution working mainly on the award-winning CONSORT project funded by ARENA. During that time, his research consisted mainly of fast distributed optimisation methods targeting a wide spectrum of applications in power systems engineering. Part of his research also revolved around designing nonlinear pricing structures for load-side distribution network support.
