Have you ever wondered what’s really involved behind the scenes in moving electrical energy around, in real-time, 24/7, at scale, across large distances and diverse geographies, with millions of end points and nodes, and with a reliability typically exceeding 99.9% (depending of course where you live)?

In the second instalment of the MEInetwork24 Seminar Series, we take a closer look at what it takes to keep essential energy flowing across electricity transmission and distribution networks. We briefly consider the activities of network owners/operators and explore past and future challenges as the ecosystem evolves to be more distributed, with increasing renewable energy participation, and having greater prominence in the energy delivery landscape.

Electrical engineer and experienced industry professional, Mr John Theunissen, will provide selected insights and esoterica around how transmission and distribution networks are planned, designed, operated, maintained, augmented, and replaced. The future of electricity has always been exciting, especially now as the industry experiences a significant paradigm shift in power system architecture, consumer and community involvement, and growth in renewable distributed energy resources.

SPEAKER

John Theunissen
Electrical engineer

John currently provides a technical advisory service to C4NET’s Enhanced System Planning Project.

John is an electrical engineer who held numerous technical management roles within AusNet Services and its predecessor companies from 1995 to 2022, initially in the protection, control and communication areas, and later in leading smart grid and network modernisation initiatives.

Previously he was Corporate Protection Consultant with ESKOM in South Africa, and before that worked for Siemens Limited, where he was responsible for Siemensʼ national protection relaying and disturbance recording business.
