The Melbourne Energy Institute was pleased to host Mr Kevin Ly, Group Manager for Reform Development and Insights at the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), on 9 August as he presented findings from AEMO’s Q2 2022 Quarterly Energy Dynamics (QED) report, covering dynamics, trends and outcomes in Australia’s electricity and gas markets in the period 1 April to 30 June 2022. Discussion was moderated by MEI Director Professor Michael Brear.

The National Electricity Market (NEM), of which AEMO is the operator, in the second quarter of the year was briefly suspended for the first time since it was established. The rationale and outcome of this unprecedented measure featured in discussion of a dynamic quarter for Australia's energy markets.

The latest QED tracks the unprecedented price rises in the NEM and east coast gas markets and their drivers, market interventions required during June to maintain power system reliability and security, a new maximum demand record in Queensland, changes in the NEM supply mix and the drivers for Western Australia’s Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM)’s Balancing Price reaching a four-year high.
