In partnership with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), the Melbourne Energy Institute regularly hosts the MEIxAEMO Seminar Series, sparking discussion on the findings of AEMO’s Quarterly Energy Dynamics report. The report covers dynamics, trends and outcomes in Australia’s electricity and gas markets.

In 2023, the MEIxAEMO Seminar Series will be presented by Mr Kevin Ly, Group Manager for Reform Development and Insights, and Dr Shaun Hooper, Manager – Market Insights at AEMO, with discussion moderated by academic experts from the Melbourne Energy Institute.

Mr Kevin Ly
Group Manager - Reform Development and Insights 
Australian Energy Market Operator

Kevin Ly is the Group Manager for Reform Development and Insights at the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). His role covers many aspects of energy markets, including market design, policy and regulation, working with the Energy Security Board (ESB), the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), and the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) on market reform. Kevin is also responsible for the development and publication of the Quarterly Energy Dynamics report.

Prior to joining AEMO, Kevin held a variety of senior wholesale and market development roles at Snowy Hydro and CS Energy, extending back to the commencement of the National Electricity Market (NEM) in December 1998.

Kevin is an engineer by training, and holds a Masters degree in Engineering Science from Queensland University of Technology (QUT), a Masters degree in Arts (Applied Research) from Macquarie University, and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Queensland.

Dr Shaun Hooper
Manager – Market Insights 
Australian Energy Market Operator

Shaun Hooper is the Manager – Market Insights at the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). His role covers publishing the Quarterly Energy Dynamics report, a flagship AEMO publication, and producing insights in the development and design of the Australian energy markets.

Prior to joining AEMO, Shaun held various roles in the energy sector covering risk management, finance, settlements, commercial analysis and advisory, at different generation, retail and consultancy companies.

Shaun is a physicist by training, acquiring a PhD from the University of Western Australia and a BSc majoring in Mathematics and Physics from Monash University.
